Week 27 – March 25 – March 31


Language Arts:
Nate did Spelling City and he learned to spell many new words.  He is really enjoying having his own email account and emailing his cousin, Makenna.  He asks how to spell words and is really using his spelling skills.  He ran out of Hardy Boys books so he read Chocolate Fever and More Stories from Grandma’s Attic.  He did some Daily Grams.  He does daily Bible Reading and prayer with his family.  He went to the library and got some more Hardy Boys books.   He also got some I am Canada series books.  He watched some DVDs including Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases which caused a lot of giggles.
Math:
Nate watched the DVD lessons for 21 and 22 and did the lessons.  He learned about adding and subtracting fractions with whole numbers and regrouping.
Science:




We went to Soulshine Ranch to pick up our new boar.  He is so cute and friendly.  The boys named him “Porky”.  The big pigs kept chasing him around.  He kept jumping and spinning and running.  We laughed so hard!!!! The bluebirds are back.  We also saw some swans at the 103!  And the geese are honking all the time!!!  It is great to hear them.  Nate took a lock apart and learned about all the parts and how a lock works.  Very interesting.
Social Studies:
We finished Frontenac and the Iroquois and the French are in control of Canada.  Nathan was wondering how Canada became mainly English.  I told him that is coming!  He learned about La Venendrie, Captain Cook and his voyages, sloops, Wolfe, Montcalm, the British taking control of Canada, Henday, and Hearn.  He did very neat mapwork.  He learned about explorers of the Pacific Coast.  He added many pictures to his Book of Centuries.  He started listening to Captain of the Discovery and learned that Vancouver sailed with Cook on two voyages.  He also completed pages 15 – 19 of Canada Map Book #6.
Other stuff:
Nathan helped me pack up some homeschool books and resources and take them to the Homeschool Curriculum Swap at Juanita’s.  We also took some homeschool books to the library where they are supposed to be setting up a homeschool shelf for us.
iPad:
Nathan asked Kenna what her favourite apps are.  So…Nate downloaded Temple Run and is really enjoying it.  He looks up maps and places on his iPad for Social Studies.
PE:  Nathan was outside LOTS this week.  He did his animal chores and helped his dad feed the cattle.  He went to swimming lessons and shaved some time off his long swim!!!  He did an awesome job on his front crawl this week.  And Nate enjoyed playing golf!  Bullet (Sarah's dog) brings the balls back to Nate!

Spring Break – March 18 – March 24

Well…we did a few things this week…even though it was officially spring break…

Language Arts:
Nate wasn’t feeling very well so he read lots of Hardy Boys books! He learned to spell many new words this week using Spelling City. He did a couple of Daily Grams.

Math:
Nate played Math games on the iPad with me. He watched Lesson 19 and 20 and did the lessons and some review. He watched Lesson 21 as well.

Science:
It was the first day of spring on Tuesday! Hopefully we will get WARM weather now! Nate listened to the Elements song and looked at the Table of Elements on his iPad with sample of the elements and information about them. He did a lesson from Elements of Faith – Hydrogen. He really enjoyed it. He watched some McGyver episodes with many “science” experiments and explosions.

Social Studies:
Nate listened to Frontenac and the Iroquois. He learned about Henry Kelsey and did some mapping.

Other Stuff:
Nate enjoyed staying at the cabin with his dad and brother.

iPad:
Nate played X Plane with helicopters and float planes.

PE:
Nate went for a couple of long walks with his mom to the gravel pit. We even took a book and I read to Nate while he dug in the gravel pit. It’s nice to find some “dirt” to play in. But we have to trudge through some deep snow to get to the dirt bank.

Week 26 – March 11 – March 17

Language Arts:
Nathan read more Hardy Boys books! He continues to email is cousin, Makenna. It is excellent writing practice and he likes to check to make sure that his spelling is correct. He practices his spelling words with Spelling City. He does Daily Grams. He went to the library. He watched Night in the Museum with his brother and they both laughed a lot.

Math:
Nate played chess with his sister. He did 17F. He watched Math U See DVD lesson 18. He did lessons 18A, 18B,

Science:
We're watching for signs of spring!

Social Studies:
Nathan updated his Book of Centuries with the current historical figures his is studying.
He started listening to Frontenac and the Iroquois. He cut out and assembled a fort, building, teepee, and canoe.

Other Stuff:
Nathan helped make supper and it turned out GREAT! He decided to make Double Chocolate Chip Cookies all by himself!!!! They turned out awesome!!!!

Nathan visited with Keiran and enjoyed playing with him. He went to town and saw many homeschoolers including Stephen who is in his swimming lessons class!

He helped his mom clean the living room. He vacuumed the kitchen.

He helped his dad feed the critters around here. Then he went to the cabin with his dad, brother, and sister. He enjoyed his time there and spend lots of time outside.

iPad:
Nate really enjoys his iPad. He plays many games, math games, music stuff, and emails. He uses the dictionary to help him find meanings to words. He also enjoys taking photos and “distorting” them and adding funny details.

PE:
Nate enjoyed some long walks with his mom and sister. He stacked wood.

Drawing:
He was enjoying drawing different kinds of bugs.

Week 25 - March 4 – March 10

Nate enjoyed building with K'Nex! He built a carousel with horses and cars.

Language Arts:
Nathan continues to enjoy reading Hardy Boys. He’s working his way through all the books! He practiced his spelling words with Spelling City. He is really enjoying having his own email account and emailing his cousin, Makenna, who lives in Abbotsford. He did some Daily Grams. He watched Lady and the Tramp, Looney Tunes, Madagascar 2, and Tom and Jerry. He went to the library and picked out some new books and DVDs.

Math:
Nathan played chess with the computer and with his siblings. He did Lessons 17C, 17D, and 17E.

Science:
Nate is enjoying signs of spring! Blackbirds, robins, geese, and killdeer have returned!!! YIPPPPEEE! Sarah and Nathan has a paper airplane challenge to see who could construct a long flying plane.

Social Studies:
Nate is listening to Runner of the Woods about Pierre Radisson who helped start the Hudson’s Bay Fur Trading Company. He learned about Henry Hudson and various people during that time period. He did mapping and questions about what he learned.

Other Stuff:
Nate enjoyed spending time with his dad on Tuesday while Wes, Sarah, and I went to Kamloops! It was my birthday so when we got home we enjoyed a Black Forest cake to celebrate.

iPad:
Nate enjoys some math games and music programs.

PE:
Nate enjoyed being outside. He stacked wood. He also went for a snowmobile ride. HeBold rode the stationary bike he put together. He slid on his crazy carpet. The most fun is chasing pigs!!!! Nathan enjoyed another swimming lesson! He is doing a great job. Claire is very pleased with his endurance! He went for a couple of long walks with mom. He rode his horse, Frisky. We had packing snow so we enjoyed a snowball fight.

Music:
Nate enjoyed playing the piano and the recorder!

Mechanicing:
Nate put together a stationary bike for me! Now I can pedal indoors on yucky days. Thanks, Nate! He helped his brother mechanic on the tractor.

Week 24 – February 26 – March 3, 2012

Language Arts:
Nate continues to LOVE reading Hardy Boys books. He is so excited about what he reads that he is in the process of writing his own mystery. He did a mind map/web to put his thoughts down. We went over the writing process and he began writing his book. He is using the computer to record his words (doing his own keyboarding). He did Spelling City and got 100% on his test. For Simply Grammar he did a noun and verb review. He did Daily Grams 4 - . He started memorizing a poem about the 8 parts of speech. Nate went to the library. He got a TLA webmail account and had so much fun emailing his cousin, Makenna, who lives in Abbotsford.

Math:
Nate completed Lesson 16F. He watched the DVD for Lesson 17. He did 17A and 17B. He is learning about adding and subtracting mixed numbers. He played Uno and Dutch Blitz and kept score. He played chess on the computer.

Science:
What a crazy weather week! We had – 32 C Sunday night. Then we had LOTS of snow. Then it got warmer. Nate saw a robin this week and the horses are starting to shed. Definitely signs of spring! We did some snow research by reading Snow Watch from Kids Can Press, cut virtual paper snowflakes, and saw photos of snowflakes on the internet.

Social Studies:
Nate is listening to information about the Fur Trade. He is listening to the story Runner of the Woods about Pierre Radisson. He did some mapping. He updated his Book of Centuries. He learned to play the game Risk. Nate did some code (Rune) writing with his sister.

Other stuff:
Bold
iPad:
Nate started writing his mystery on his iPad. He enjoys playing a snowboarding game.
Art:

Music:
Nate played the piano and recorder this week. He enjoyed the song House at Pooh Corner. He said it sounded mysterious. He learned about minor chords.

PE:
Nate did his outside chores which include stacking wood, rounding up pigs, and running water for the critters. Nate had lots of fun playing in the snow! And the best PE this week was swimming lessons. He LOVES his swimming lessons and is learning so much. After swimming lessons he enjoys playing with Hannah (from 4-H) and with his new friend, Stephen, who is homeschooled, too. Stephen just moved here from Terrace.
